5 Genius Moves For Your Summer Vacation

5 Genius Moves For Your Summer Vacation

I don’t know about you and your family, but after the weather that we endured in West Virginia this year, I’m ready to be outside and soaking up every ounce of sunshine I can get.  However summer usually brings with it an increase in spending as we visit places that we were not able to get to with the five layers of clothing needed to survive the trek to the car. Not everyone’s bank account is ready on short notice for all of the fun activities that we want to get ourselves into, so I pulled out all of my creative juices to develop a list of 5 genius moves for your summer vacation that Read more [...]

When a Spender and a Saver Marry: 5 Tips to Bring Unity

spender saver marry

Once upon a time two young people fell in love, had a whirl-wind courtship and engagement period, then married a little over a year later. He’s a banker, I was a teacher. He had been living on his own for a few years, where as I just graduated from college and moved back in with my mom. He had been making a steady income for a while, I just received my first real check as a professional (that’s a lot of money! Or so I thought) We begin meeting regularly together (http://creativehomekeeper.com/weekly-meeting-happy-marriage-secret/), even before we married, to start discussing how we would budget Read more [...]

So you think you Want to Homeschool: Part 4 The big S

The Big S- Socialization…. Part 4 Making Friends takes more of an effort when you homeschool.  But I would say it is akin to when your children were preschoolers and you set up play dates with like minded families whoe kids roughly lined up with yours. But instead of play dates after your first year you may want to join a co-op, start a cop or participate in an ongoing class or group. Additionally, as you run across homeschooler that you think are a good fit for your family make the effort to get to know them. More Than Enough

More than Enough

I have 24 hours in a day. You have 24 hours in a day. No more. No less. My husband brings in a certain amount of money each month and a certain amount is already spoken for each month.  No more. No less. Have you ever read the account of the feeding of the multitudes? Let’s go over Matthew 14:15-21, shall we? 15As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to Read more [...]

5 Ways to Make Money from Home

5 Ways to Make Money from Home

I don’t know about you, but I was raised in a home where my mother worked from 9am – 5pm and I was a latch-key kid. At some point when I entered junior high, she worked two jobs and she returned to school to get an associate’s degree — all while pregnant with her 4th child! (This is where I inherit my insanity.) My mom’s generation was one where women were encouraged to work outside the home, give up breastfeeding, send their kids to daycare and cook only from convenience packages. And while I applaud the women’s liberation movement for the many freedoms it brought to women, I also wish Read more [...]

be still

How are you today? Maybe you are waiting for something and trying not to worry Maybe you are trying to deal with a health diagnosis and don’t know where to turn Maybe you are hurting and wish the pain would end Maybe you are unable to find the words to express how you are feeling deep inside ‘Even if the mountains heave up from their anchors, and the hills quiver and shake, I will not desert you. You can rely on My enduring love; My covenant of peace will stand forever. So says the Eternal One, whose love won’t give up on you.’ Isaiah 54:10 The Voice When Read more [...]

You can’t Afford Not To! {Talk about Money}

Basic Financial Principles to live by

When my husband and I were young, naive and newly married, we met with a financial planner. Our financial situation was pretty bleak. Self-employed. No savings. No insurance. No retirement plan. In debt to the IRS. No credit score. Like I said-bleak. Our financial guy put together a list of 10 things that we had to do, and then broke it down into a 5 year plan. It was very over whelming. He wanted us to pay off our debt, save for a rainy day, save for retirement, get insurances and generally climb mountains. We understood the need to pay off our IRS debt. But save money? We can’t afford to Read more [...]

Fun and Frugal

Having fun even in the tough times

The economics of raising a family can be extremely difficult.  I remember struggling at various times while our daughter was growing up.  There are, however, a few things that can really help. First, let me tell you a couple of funny stories.  Once, when we were having an especially difficult period while we lived in southern Utah, my daughter and I had gone in to town (65 miles away) for a doctor appointment.  After the appointment we went to Walmart.  I had no money to spend.  But we grabbed a cart and went through the store putting the things we would like to purchase into our cart.  Read more [...]

Time Capsule

Time Capsule

My husband and I frequently walk our dog down the long sidewalks in our neighborhoods. It’s not always the loveliest walk, where creative drive-by crud-throwing is an Olympic sport. But recently, I found this charming bottle, unbroken, and not that dirty. After a little shining up, I found it mandatory to stuff it full of M&Ms. What really gives me the jollies is the thought of turning it into a time capsule! It’s not a large bottle, so I’d need to fill it with teensy thingamabobs, or a piece of paper with photographs of whatchacallits, or a flashdrive with pictures of doo-dahs. Read more [...]

Fatherhood

Fatherhood

. Ephesians 6:1-4 “Children, obey your parents as the Lord wants, because this is the right thing to do. The command says, ‘Honor your father and mother.’(This is the first command that has a promise with it) ‘Then everything will be well with you, and you will have a long life on the earth.’ Fathers, do not make your children angry, but raise them with the training and teaching of the Lord.” I truly love being a father. Both my children still live at home and I love spending time doing whatever it is that they’re into doing. I’m thankful that I’m still invited into their worlds. Read more [...]
