There are times in life when helmets are absolutely necessary. Like when you play football, or ride a motorcycle, or have any kind of major reason to need to give your brain some extra TLC.
And there are places in life when helmets are absolutely necessary. Like when you walk around a construction site, or you are on a battlefield , or you go spulanking, or you are speed racing on a motorcycle.
Because helmets were invented to protect your head and your face. They are that extra space between you and the danger out there, like a cozy blanket separates you from the cold at night. It’s not that it makes the cold disappear; it just insulates you from it somehow.
Helmets keep you protected from much. They are the extra layer that the danger has to go through before it can get to you. So it stands to reason to have really, really strong helmets. Because if your helmet is solid, you might very well stay safe from whatever is out there…
God tells us that we ought to put on the helmet of salvation. Not the helmet of financial security, or emotional stability, or education, or even church commitment.
Just salvation.
Because salvation protects our heads and faces. Salvation is that extra space between us and the danger out there. It’s not that it makes the danger disappear. It just insulates us from it somehow.
Salvation mindedness keeps us protected.
In the Alphabet of Life, H is for helmet.
“Put on the full armor of God (…) and take the helmet of salvation.”
Ephesians 6: 10-17
