Oily skin can be a real menace. It leads to various skin problems like acne, pimples and blemishes. This happens due to the overproduction of sebum, a waxy substance that naturally conditions the skin. Before treating oily skin, it is important to address its root cause. It is mostly caused due to unhealthy eating habits, stress and lack of sleep. Pregnancy, menopause and intake of birth control pills can also increase the skin’s sebum production. Don’t worry! In most cases, oily skin can be easily treated at home. Follow a skin care routine and a healthy diet to tackle this skin menace and flaunt a flawless skin in no time!
1. Wash Your Face:
One of the best ways to treat oily skin is by following a proper skin care routine. Excessive oil secretion makes the skin dirty and greasy. It is important to wash your face twice a day to combat this feeling. Dermatologists recommend washing the face twice daily with glycerin soap. People with acne-prone skin should use an antibacterial soap with benzoyl peroxide to discourage the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Use a cleanser that contains alpha-hydroxyl acid, citric acid and glycolic acid as its active ingredients. This will help to slough off the dead cells and reduce oil secretion, combating infection.
Wash your face with lukewarm water to remove excess oil and grime from the skin. Lukewarm water breaks down oil more efficiently than cold water. Follow it up with a cold-water splash to close the open skin pores, and keep the skin clean and oil-free for a longer time. Washing your face too often dries out the skin, encouraging it to produce more oil. Do not wash your face more than twice a day.
2. Toning and moisturizing:
Witch hazel toner works best for the oily skin type. Witch hazel contains tannins, which help to shrink the pore size and soak up excess oils when applied on the face. Pour the toner on a cotton ball and apply it on your skin before going off to bed. There are plenty of toners, especially formulated for oily skin, available in the market. Make sure that the toner does not contain any added fragrance and alcohol.
Oily-skinned beauties should skip the moisturizing part as their skin is doing more than adequate to keep it naturally supple and smooth. Do not forget to apply a non-comedogenic sunscreen before stepping out of the house.
Oily skin attracts much more dust than any other skin type. Regular scrubbing will remove the dead skin cells, cleansing the pores thoroughly. Mix 1 tablespoon of oatmeal with Aloe Vera gel. Rub the paste gently on the skin and leave it on for 15 minutes. Wash it off thoroughly with cold water. People with acne-prone skin should skip this process as it can aggravate the irritation. Aloe Vera contains antioxidants and cleansing extracts, which clear the skin off impurities.
4. Facial mask:
Scrubbing leaves the pores open; it is important to close these with a soothing face pack.
A clay mask is very beneficial for reducing oiliness. It helps to tone the skin and draws out impurities from it. Mix fuller’s earth with rose water to make a paste. Apply it on your face and leave until it dries. Wash it off after 20 minutes to get smooth and oil-free skin.
An egg white mask firms the skin and soaks up excess oils. Mix one teaspoon of honey with egg white and apply on the skin, avoiding the eye area. Rinse it off after 10 minutes.
Lemon is the most widely used natural ingredient for removing excess oils from the skin. It contains citric acid and Vitamin C that control excess sebum secretion. Massage lemon juice mixed with honey for a few minutes and wash it off once it dries.
Exfoliate your skin once a week to get rid of excess sebum. Add ½ teaspoon of baking soda to your cleanser and rub gently on oily areas like the nose and chin. Rinse it off with cool water. Use this remedy for 3 weeks to see an improvement in your skin tone.
A healthy diet is very important for keeping the skin oil and shine free. Eat large amounts of fruits and vegetables to provide nourishment to the skin. Take 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil every day. Flaxseed is known to improve many skin conditions. Reduce your intake of excess sugar, Trans and saturated fats. Cut down on fried and highly processed foods to keep the skin and body healthy. Drink at least 10 glasses of water every day to keep the body hydrated and to clear the toxins from your body.
Steaming is considered a very effective technique for controlling excess oil secretion. Boil water on high flame and transfer it to a bowl. Lean over the bowl and create a steam tent by draping a towel over it. Steam your face for 5 to 7 minutes.
8. Use salt spray:
A salt spray is a unique method to get rid of oily skin. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt in water and stir until it dissolves. Transfer it to a spray bottle and spray on the face once a day. Do not wash it off after it dries. You will notice a visible difference within a few days.
